Glen Hatchell, dog trainer, behaviorist–“Ask The Trainer,” 18th edition

by | Aug 5, 2026

As we’ve done 17 times before—spanning five-plus years–today’s program involved setting aside the usual “Talking Animals” format in order to present the show-length feature, “Ask The Trainer.”  In each session of ATT, listeners are invited to call or email (or text) questions about their dogs or cats, mainly behavior or training issues. The Trainer these listeners have an opportunity to consult is Glen Hatchell, the retired Behavior and Enrichment Manager at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, a Certified Professional Dog Trainer, and veteran, accomplished dog trainer and behaviorist. He is also a former WMNF programmer, and occasionally guest hosts “Talking Animals.”  In today’s edition, before responding to the first listener question, Glen focused his opening segment on cats, outlining the ways working with felines tend to be similar to–and different from—working with dogs. The first listener question came from an insider of sort—David “White Pepper” Bryant, co-host of “Da Soul Kitchen,” airing Fridays on WMNF, 8-10pm—asking why cats like to “make biscuits” and about cats walking in a harness… another emailer writes in, saying his stepson moved in with them, bringing a dog that bites, and seeking Glen’s counsel…Suzanne emailed with a recommended procedure for getting a cat accustomed to walking in a harness…a caller (disproportionately few of those today) says that when they take their dog for a walk, their cat often chooses to join them, wondering if that’s unusual. (Glen: “Not if it’s an indoor/outdoor cat—not at all.”)…”The Commuter,” a WMNF alum, mentions he and his wife have had three Schipperkes in a row, marveling at the dogs’ resolute devotion to observing a precise schedule for walks, meals, and more…There were back-to-back emails, companion pieces that inquired about her cat attacking the emailer in bed while she tried to sleep, while the other missive described being attacked by her cat at night, before bedtime…
