Owing primarily to Holiday weekend-related snags in booking guests—and retaining guests that had seemed booked–we set aside our typical format, operating guest-free in something of a throwback to the earlier days of “Talking Animals,” when Animal News segments and multiple animal songs were the order of the day. So, we returned to our fabled Rip-&-Read Newsroom, reading various stories large and small:
Including about the possible fate of Patty, the only remaining elephant at The Bronx Zoo, following the recent death of Happy, the Bronx Zoo elephant at the center of a high-profile legal challenge brought by the Nonhuman Rights Projects, which filed a petition of habeas corpus, part of the organization’s effort to establish Happy qualified as a “person” under the law. Officials with the Wildlife Conservation Society, which runs the Bronx Zoo, are contemplating sending Patty to
The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee.
In a time of the year where people often take Alaskan cruises, this sad story noted that residents of Seward, Alaska, assembled to honor the life of an endangered pregnant fin whale who died as a result of being struck by a cruise ship, while issuing calls to the cruise industry to put measures in place to help prevent such tragedies in the future.
I aired some pieces produced by the WMNF News Department, including a story about local animal shelters being overcrowded, and steps to mitigate this problem, including renewed encouragement for people to foster shelter animals.
Of course, this being in the midst of World Cup commotion, we felt compelled to read a brief story chronicling the online sensation known as Merlin, the duck sporting the Team Mexico jersey while waddling around his home of Mexico City. Merlin landed a meeting with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
And so on…
