Adam Roberts—executive vice president and co-founder of Born Free USA—outlines the chief categories of animal welfare that Born Free USA concerns itself with, noting where those efforts overlap and differ from those of the Born Free Foundation, which gave rise to and shares DNA with the American organization. He also addresses the extensive databases that Born Free USA maintains of animal issues, abuses, news stories, pending legislation and more. Fittingly, Roberts goes on to address what he considers to be a couple of the most significant pieces of pending animal-oriented legislation. He also discusses animal sanctuaries, and how he helped found the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (on whose board he serves as president), laying out the criteria GFAS uses to evaluate and accredit sanctuaries. Roberts also speaks to the whole enterprise of elephant rides—which often become a more high-profile issue this time of year—and responds to concerns raised in listener e-mails and calls, including a Tampa restaurant called Taco Fusion that serves lion and other “game meats” and Dade City’s Wild Things and how they use (in all senses of the word) monkeys and big cats, including their swim with tiger cubs attraction.
