Darlynn Czerner–founder of Darlynn’s Darlins, a Polk City, FL animal sanctuary, advocacy and education organization–discusses the history of the sanctuary, which includes some foreshadowing rescues while living in Tennessee and then Florida. She also addresses the first, perhaps more pivotal rescue of a pig (named Lucy), discovered there was nowhere to place the pig, and kept her at the family home. From there, Czerner remembers, a few more pigs were added here and there–then the pig population at Darlynn’s Darlins exploded in the wake of a 2003 Osceola County rescue that yielded 68 additional pig residents to the sanctuary. There are now 181 pigs there, and over 200 animals overall living there. She went on to describe some of those animals, including Homer, the majordomo pig of sorts, and how all those pigs get along together, how they behave, their intelligence and more. She also explains how donations–not just financial donations, but food and other resources–to Darlynn’s Darlins work, as well as opportunities to volunteer there.
