Sybil Erden–director of The Oasis Sanctuary, a rescue and retirement facility for exotic and endangered birds–discusses the history and operation of this 71-acre sanctuary in Southeastern Arizona, some of the fundamental instinctive and behavioral traits of parrots and other birds that people commonly bring into the home as companion animals, and how those traits and others (including life expectancies that can reach 60-80 years old) pose unique challenges that the humans involved didn’t fully understand initially or aren’t otherwise equipped to deal with.
