I live in Montana and for years I lived very near a sled dog operation and one day when my friend saw the way these loving animals we call "mans best friend" were living this life of torture and he spontaneously said "this just Auschwitz for dogs!" I never forgot those words and how that truth hurt my heart because it was so discripitive and to the point that How NO animal,be it human or canine, should be abandoned to this life!
Unfortunately, in the film, claims made by Stu Nelson, the Iditarod’s chief veterinarian, aren’t corrected by anyone giving the facts. He portrays the Iditarod as an event in which dogs get good veterinary care. They don’t.

Mushers often blast through checkpoints, so dogs don’t get physical examinations. In some cases, dogs who have been at checkpoints for hours have died soon after leaving.

Iditarod veterinarians allow sick and injured dogs to race. In a recent Iditarod, one of Lance Mackey’s male dogs ripped out all of his 16 toenails trying to get to a female who was in heat. This type of broken toenail is extremely painful. But veterinarians allowed Mackey to continue to race him. Imagine the agony the dog was forced to endure.

Here’s another example: Veterinarians have allowed dogs with kennel cough to race in the Iditarod even though dogs with this disease should be kept warm and given lots of rest. Strenuous exercise can cause lung damage, pneumonia and even death. To make matters worse, kennel cough is a highly contagious disease that normally lasts from 10 to 21 days.

Nelson claimed that 30 percent of the dogs are dropped at checkpoints. That’s inaccurate. On average, fifty percent of the dogs are left at checkpoints because they’re injured, sick or exhausted.

Hi Duncan, I relay appreciated your show last week about the issues regarding Ringling. You were very thorough. I was especially pleased that you addressed the small size of the conservatory their elephants are at and the fact that they still may be loaned out or sold to zoos. I think so many people think the elephants are at an actual sanctuary. You really did a great job. Could have gone on about another hour! Anyway, thanks for all your work. Will be contributing towards your marathon goal again. Peace.

I am a medical human provider for medical cannabis and i have to take issue with your speaker's comments about medical cannabis causing over doses because that is simply not true. Plus, medical cannabis is Safe for children and in fact we treat kids with medical cannabis who have seizures, cancer and psych disorders and other medical diseases. if someone OD'd on cannabis, they had other substances or medications in their system that were in the lethal toxicity range. The speaker made it sound like medical cannabis is just as bad a meth or heroin and that is just simply not true.
The speaker needs to clarify her plant type when she speaks, because what she is speaking about is the indica plant type and a high CBD indica and yes, the most common delivery system is either a tincture which is a oral liquid or a topical or an edible when used in animals.
Cannabis has been used in the vet industry with equines for years and in other animals without an issue.

Hi Candace,

Thanks for your note. Phineas' story sounds truly awful on a number of levels, but I can't help thinking that--as this is a comment to my post on Jill Rappaport being a guest on "Talking Animals"--that you must really intend this information for her.

After all, she is television reporter who has a national platform, with the "Today" show & "NBC Nightly New," while I host a radio show in Tampa.

So it seems impractical for me to contact Mr. Simon, or otherwise pursue this matter. But I urge you to contact Ms. Rappaport to do so, and wish you--& Phineas--the best of luck with this. Thanks.
Kind Regards,
Duncan

Dear Mr. Strauss,

There is a situation in Salem, Missouri that I would like to make you aware of. A yellow Labrador named Phineas was unjustly sentenced to be euthanized by the City for allegedly being vicious. Hundreds of thousands of dog/animal lovers from around the country and the world have been following Phineas' plight. This Thursday, October 17th, a hearing had been scheduled wherein Phineas might very well have been ordered to be set free. We were all anxiously awaiting this hearing and hoping for the best.

Unfortunately, this last Friday night, October 11th, Phineas was stolen from the veterinary clinic where he was being held. Hundreds of thousands of us are now desperately trying to help locate Phineas. We are asking for your company's help.

The attorney who was representing Phineas has pledged a $25,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever might have stolen and hurt Phineas. We are asking that you take up this cause.

Please give your urgent consideration to this request.

The attorney's name is Joseph P. Simon and you can contact him through his Facebook page at Joseph P. Simon Law LLC.

Thank you so much and please help us save Phineas!

REPEATING MY REPLY TO YOUR OTHER COMMENT: Hello Maria...I think you may be a bit confused here: John Bradshaw was a past guest on "Talking Animals"--when his dog book was out--but has not been on again, since his new cat book was published. You heard him on "Fresh Air" with Terry Gross. So I'm afraid your comments intended for him aren't going to reach him, or be read by him.
Hello -- at one point in the Terry Gross interview you said feeding ferals was a faulty way to control their population and that they are dangerous to birds. It seemed you slightly changed that opinion in the middle of the interview. I want to give you my opinion on FERALS.
These cats are abandoned and cannot fend for themselves. TNR (Trap, Neuter,Release) is a humane "program" that millions of caring people undertake to help these animals and the general public. They are trapped, fixed, and then returned to their home turf to be fed throughout the rest of their lives. This keeps the ferals from hunting birds, as opposed to his idea that feeding encourages them to hunt; that's just not true. What would you do with ferals?? Would you trap and kill them? Studies show that TNR is the most effective and humane way to control feral populations. Please emphasize the GOOD work the volunteers do because we often encounter many uninformed people who are hostile because they don't understand or they just don't care about animals. We (as many groups around the world I'm sure) spend our own money and time on this and do it out of empathy. Thank you.

I started out w/3 baby rhode island red chicks. Now I have one left after a raccoon attack and a cat attack when they were not fully grown. Her name is Big Bird and is very aggressive and fought off a raccoon as well as escaping after an attack. She is very mean but also tame. She loves raw meat esp beef. She prefers pinkie mice and lizards over chicken feed or bread, sits on my lap, tries to spar w/me sometimes and even knows her name and knows what the word "no" means. She comes in the house every night now and goes out in the morning.Cats are now afraid of her and she chases them away. The other one who made it to adulthood before getting eaten tried to get me to mate w/her.If you don't believe me I can elaborate.I will soon have a video on youtube of Big Bird jumping up on my lap, eating chunks of bloody steak as well as pinkie and fuzzy mice, the same kind that people feed to pet snakes.
Hey there! I know this is kinda off topic but I was wondering which blog platform are you using for this website? I'm getting tired of WordPress because I've had problems with hackers and I'm looking at options for another platform. I would be awesome if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.
